Get Those Kids Outside (With Layers)

Hey Mama,

Last week we had an almost 70 degree day and a snow storm all in one week, now it’s been super cold again. I may be ready for Spring but we dtill have some cold weeks left here in MA so I thought it‘s not too late to chat about this Getting kids outside no matter the weather.

When I spoke about it yesterday on stories some of you agreed how important it was for all of our sanity and sleep but the main comment/ question I got was, but it’s so coldddd!!! How do they do it??

The thing is that I see the difference being cooped up vs having fresh air does to us all, and right now with homeschool we especially need it, so I make it a non negotiable that they get outside, even if it’s just for a walk. Now that we are in the burbs and there is snow I let them out and watch from inside while I fold laundry or reset the school room.

Second, we wear the correct gear. Just like in the rain where you would not go out without rain boots, an umbrella and water proof coat, in the winter you layer up (the right layers) and then just be sure to keep moving.

Here are some linked items that are similar to what the girls are wearing. I suggest you size up so it can last a few seasons ( these are from last year) and store in a separately so you can find everything you need for walks.

Base layers! heat tech layers are a family favorite.

we have these leggings, these fleece turtlenecks and these heat tech long sleeve tops.

I just ordered these hot chilis because they got the best reviews (went up a size for both so they’ll fit next year.

We have this base layer set in white, doubles for a cute outfit. This floral set is so cute.

Any undershirts work but we love how cute these are.

These wool base layers are ones we have bought in the pat.

Nylon tights also work wonders, I use to put them on myself and the girls When walking around NYC.

Wool socks, knee high Is best for the extra warmth.

Sweatshirts, these tunic ones are a fabulous deal. I have them in a bunch of colors for the girls, perfect for leggings!

These balaclavas are so cozy and adjustable.

These are by far the best mittens! We have a few pairs and they stay on and are great length for tucking in.

Sorel boots are my favorite, I just sent my brother the girls ones because they last forever. The adjustable top keeps the snow and cold out!

Snow pants and coat from Hannah Anderson ( Ami’s hand me down and I just ordered this one for next year, and this for Zoe because they are such great quality).

Snow pants, I have bought Hannah Anderson but they seem to be sold out, if you still are looking these are a great basic and can be paired with any coat. We use them daily on walks and to play outside, in NYC all kids wore snow pants to keep warm walking and playing all winter long.

I love this snow suit, highlight rated too!

And lets all be sure they go potty before starting… hahaha.

I also have this post with games you can play on your walk, I promise it’s worth it!

xoxo
