We are well into the real cold New England months here and well I have always had some tricks up my sleeve for keeping the girls entertained. The one I can always get them excited (and most importantly keep their attention) with, is a sensory bin! And in all honestly what parent during a pandemic doesn’t want something fun, entertaining, and easy to store?!
They can seem intimidating or like you need so much to get the perfect box but the truth is, they can be as simple or extra ordinary as you want.
First, you need a vessel! I love a big plastic food container, dollar tree has great ones that I keep on hand.
Second, you need a base. Rice, pasta, or beans are my favs (we’ll talk about water play another day). You can easily dye it with food coloring or leave as is.
Third, you need the accessories, you know the small toys they collect, get them. The extra crafts, gems, pom poms, confetti, and anything else that you can grab that is on theme or on sale! 😹
Fourth, tools!
Funnels, strainers, measuring cups. measuring spoons, spoons, scoops, cups of different sizes, spoons, anything works here.
My biggest advice is, do not over think it! Pull a few things, supervise if they are tots and still in the everything in their mouth stage but otherwise just let them lead!
I started this board here to pull together some ideas for all kinds of sensory bins! Some can be over the top but keep it simple. This post is an easy way to dye your base (be sure to dry it laid out on the cookie sheets and don’t get the dye on your hands, that lasts long.)
Ofcourse I love a themed anything so these Valentine’s Day sensory boxes are just a fun way to celebrate all month with the girls!
I hope you enjoy all the quiet these will bring you.
